Location:
Strathcona Provincial park occupies the rugged, mountainous
heart of Vancouver Island. There are two main entrances. One, to
the Forbidden Plateau area, is perhaps the most popular. This
entrance is located about 30 km West of Courtenay following the
road to mount Washington. The other main entrance is where the
park headquarters is. It is located 50 km West of Campbell River
on Buttle Lake via Hwy 28. Two other entrances exist. One is
North of Port Alberni along logging roads and provides access to
Oshinow Lake. The other is also Reached through Port Alberni. It
is a boat access point to a trail that provides access to the
trail to Della Falls.
Description:
Strathcona Provincial park is the largest provincial Park on
Vancouver Island. It is a very rugged mountainous park with an
extensive network of remote hiking tails and campsites. To see
the park in all its splendor you must be willing to hike or
back-pack in to its more remote locations. However there are
also camp sites and day use areas that are easy to access too.
The Forbidden Plateau area is the most popular with the day-hike
crowd. It is also one way in to the mountainous
backcountry. There are 3 designated camping areas and 7
pit toilets scattered through the many lakes on the plateau.
The biggest road accessible campgrounds are in the Buttle Lake
area. The Ralph River Campground has 75 sites while the Buttle
Lake Campground has 85 sites.
